This is a work in progress. I was surprised at how difficult it is to get concrete information about the credit students receive from their performance on IB and AP exams. The rules vary from institution to institution and from student to student. Some institutions exempt students from lower level courses based on their AP and IB exam scores; other institutions, and in most cases, the same institutions, give actual university credit hours based on exam scores or give credit retroactively if a student shows mastery in the next course level. Still other institutions give no more than a certain number of credit hours. Complicating matters, we are, in many cases, relying on student report. Sometimes students do not know why they got six English credits (was it the AP Lit test or the IB English HL test?), but they know that they are entering college as sophomores. It seems churlish and too much like bean counting for us to probe further with questions like, "Well was that the Biology HL exam or the AP Biology exam that gave you all that credit?" We are happy for them; they are happy for themselves. Meanwhile, we'll keep working on our data collection. The following table shows what students have reported to us so far about the credit they have received. Not all students have reported, so the table is incomplete. The link here gives quotes from students, little gems that they let drop as they were reporting on their university credit, that provide anecdotal evidence of university standing as a result of high school work. |
