The IB Diploma Programme traces its start to 1968 when it began as a means to help international schools offer widely acceptable credentials to their students, mostly children of foreign nationals and diplomats, seeking to gain admission to universities in their home countries. Today, there are 1,770 schools all over the world offering the full diploma program and certificates to 94,265 students.

For a closer inspection of IB in the early days, see the history published on the IBO website.

For a sense of the growth of the Diploma Programme (DP) internationally, in North America, in Indiana, and at Signature School, see the graphs and information below.
